Julz Lynn – Califari Soul Skater

By | Cannabis, Spirituality | No Comments

Julz Lynn is the quintessential Califari Soul Skater and we were excited to spend a day with her poolside… Of course this pool was empty and fully occupied by Julz and a posse of skater bros.  Julz has been accused of skating like a guy before because she has an aggressive take no prisoners approach to dropping into pools and riding along with the best of them! This was a typical day in the life of Cali Pool Skating!

Besides being a great skater and Freestyler, Julz is also a cannabis lover and spiritual seeker!  She also has some deep creative visions, which were quite apparent when you hear her describe the new deck she designed:

I was in the parking lot of the skate park thinking about a lot of different things. I started meditating and this vision came to mind of smoke around a full moon and the smoke turned to green. There were crows circling around the full moon. A pin up girl with tattoos and a lock around her neck, I had seen Steve Alba wear a similar one actually. She had a white tiger coming out of her, teeth showing fierce with aggression. The white tiger slashed my name across the tail and flames then exploded behind tiger’s strong arm. I was thinking black and white between the pin up girl and the tiger because of the balance/ yin n yang they have. The white tiger and crows are also my spirit totem animals. The outsides have the Red Green Gold color patterns in the smoke and ad dimension in the background. I drew up a rough draft in a sketch book I had and brought it into the office at Pink Widow Distribution. I put my drawings and visions together into words and the artist Kenny McB took what I had to create something. I took a little bit and only a couple corrections and finally we had the graphic in digital form to have boards made. It is very exciting to have a pro model with Silly Girl Skateboards because not many females have their own board model and it is the first professional model board Silly Girl has put out.

City of Angels

By | History | No Comments

To celebrate 420 here in the City of Angels we picked up our bro- Wilton Rezande, who agreed to model some of our latest Califari Shirts!  Wilton is kind of a bad ass who is a black belt in Jiu Jitsu and loves to play soccer and chill when he’s not dominating his opponents!    We payed homage to the City of Angels while rocking our Venice Beach 70’s surfer shirt and it made us think… Just how did LA become the “City of Angels”?

For years, history has told that on September 4, 1781, 44 “pobladores” who were recruited from northern Mexico to help cement Spain’s control over Alta, California (Upper California), established the settlement. Only two of these settlers identified as Spaniards; the rest came primarily of African or Indian descent. However over the past few decades scholars have uncovered that the pobladores arrived separately, some as early as that June. (September 4 remains the traditional celebrated anniversary).

The small town received the name El Pueblo de Nuestra Señora Reina de los Ángeles de la Porciuncula, “The Town of Our Lady Queen of the Angels.” Located on the Los Angeles River, the settlement became a cattle ranching center. The oldest house in Los Angeles County was built in 1795 on what became the Rancho San Antonio. It is now known as the Henry Gage Mansion and is in Bell Gardens.

So there ya have it! We suppose that “The Town of Our Lady Queen of the Angels” was just too much of a mouthful, so now it’s just LA…  Should we feel short changed? Our culture is so abbreviated now, long titles are out, hell vowels are even out! We don’t have time for them any longer in our go-go gadget mindset!

Perhaps we all need to chillax, errr, I mean, chill out and relax and use complete sentences!

Cannabis for Spiritual Purposes

By | Cannabis, Hemp, History, Spirituality | No Comments

The “Church of Califari” believes that using Cannabis for Spiritual Purposes is just as important as using Cannabis for Medicinal Reasons!

“Legalize It!” -Peter Tosh

Naturally, Califari believes all states should make Cannabis legal for Medicinal and Spiritual purposes!  Califari believes Cannabis should be a legal sacrament for spiritual uses for its members 21 and over just as Red Wine is used as a sacrament in the Christian Church.

Prior to the USA’s forty year prohibition, Cannabis has been used in a entheogenic context in India since the Vedic period dating back to approximately 1500BCE, but perhaps as far back as 2000BCE. There are several references in Greek mythology to a powerful drug that eliminated anguish and sorrow. Herodotus wrote about early ceremonial practices by the Scythians, thought to have occurred from the 5th to 2nd century BCE. Itinerant Hindu saints have used it in India for centuries. [1]

In modern culture the spiritual use of cannabis has been spread by the disciples of the Rastafari movement, who use use cannabis as a part of their worshiping of their King, Haile Selassie I of Ethiopia, and as an aid to meditation.

Now it is time for the next wave of Spiritual Cannabis Achievers to restate how Cannabis and Spirituality compliment each other just like Peanut Butter & Jelly!

Bob Frum Jamaica

By | Uncategorized | No Comments

Bob Frum Jamaica refers to the notion that Bob Marley was “John Frum” Jamaica who went to California!

Califari’s beliefs have stemmed in a way that can be compared to the story of “John Frum,” who visited the Vanuatu Islands during the 1950’s and in doing so permanently changed the lives and beliefs of native islanders after what was an American military invasion. “John Frum” was how the natives referred to the members of the American Army, who had temporarily taken over the Vanuatu Islands in order to set up a Military Base.  When US Military Operation was complete and the soldiers left the island the natives could no longer go back to their past ways of thinking once they had encountered new technology and ideals. More can be read here:
The Legend of John Frum

In the 1960’s and 70’s Bob Marley from Jamaica (Bob Frum) came to “Babylon” and brought the ideals of Rastafari through his ever loving and ever lasting music and dropped it on the youth of America with great impact.

Califari is influenced by our interpretations of Rastafari as told through reggae lyrics, legends and beliefs through the lens of our California perspective, that has been hybrid with other influences from the highest level western philosophers, modern and ancient teachings and poetry, as well as, general healthy living practices.

Juan Love! One Heart! Happy Cinco De Mayo

By | History | No Comments

Juan Love! One Heart!  Cinco De Mayo has been mostly championed by Mexican and American Beer Companies since the 1970’s, who had to allow Cuervo Tequila to come to the party in the 1980’s and continue the marketing blitz!  We now look forward to Cannabis companies to steer this spring celebration in new directions!

Cinco De Mayo, however, is not just a Mexican St. Patty’s Day!

Let’s not forget what its all about in the first place = Freedom!  When the Mexican Army defended Mexico City from Napoleon III’s French Army – it was a key victory as France was invading in support of The slave owning southern Confederacy during the American Civil War.  This victory emboldened Mexican and American troops and patriotic organizations fighting for freedom throughout the South West and California.  These factions played a key part in the eventual victory for the Union Army, which paved the way for freedom for all in our democratic state.  This of course has led to more and more civil rights for all peoples in our great continent.  We need to remind ourselves to stay the course and let freedom continue to ring forth into the future!

Collective Dreams

By | Cannabis, Spirituality | No Comments

The Imagination is the goal of history, I see culture is an effort to literally realize our collective dreams.  – Terence McKenna

This idea of realizing our collective dreams seems more and more viable everyday. Technology is making leaps and bounds for communication and our electronic campfire keeps us more and more connected! Here at Califari, we take those words of wisdom seriously by putting our imagination to work daily! It seems the collective dreams are coming true in the world of cannabis! This was quite evident at the recent and thriving So Cal Cannabis Cup, where hundreds of entrepreneurs set up shop for the masses of Cannabis fans in the South lands!  We checked it out and it blew our mind! More reports on that coming soon but in the mean time – dreams do come true if you feed them! [wdi_feed id=”1″]

Stephen Hawking, Human Mind, Califari

A Word from the legendary Stephen Hawking, Part One

By | Uncategorized | No Comments

Part one of our Stephen Hawking Meme Moments!

Just in case you have been blinded by science and need to be reminded we are quoting from this brainy fella…

Stephen William Hawking was born 8 January 1942 is an English theoretical physicist, cosmologist, author and Director of Research at the Centre for Theoretical Cosmology within the University of Cambridge. His scientific works include a collaboration with Roger Penrose on gravitational singularity theorems in the framework of general relativity, and the theoretical prediction that black holes emit radiation, often called Hawking radiation. Hawking was the first to set forth a theory of cosmology explained by a union of the general theory of relativity and quantum mechanics. He is a vigorous supporter of the many-worlds interpretation of quantum mechanics.

We are huge fans of this cosmic thinker and will be learning and quoting him as the future unfolds!

California Firefighter, califari

Let’s Thank Burton Eubank, a California Firefighter!

By | Uncategorized | No Comments
Meet our friend, Burton Eubank, a devoted father and a California Firefighter, who is Captain of the Inverness, California Fire Department in Point Reyes California. When he is not out there helping to save lives, he is a school teacher, soccer coach, musician and a trail builder. Burton lives by one simple philosophy, “The best thing someone can do with their lives is to be of service to their community.” Burton rides his bike everywhere he goes so that he leaves a smaller carbon footprint on the planet. Clearly, Burton has the most positive way at looking at life, which we aim to learn from! Positivity attracts positivity, which emits from Burton on a daily basis!

In fact here is a quote from one of Burton’s recent Facebook postings: “has discovered that when not involved in the Rat Race, every day is a great day (Yes, even Mondays)! When work is available, I am happy to go do it. Mostly, it helps to do the kind of work that inspires you. Live with passion”

Here is a moment in time from his life in Northern California!
